Description: Keep connected to nature just beyond your doorstep! Our neighborhoods are full of natural wonders if we take the time to notice. In this class, you will learn new ways to sketch, note-take, and intentionally observe the life growing out our windows.
We’ll start with an intentional 2-block stroll to the park. There, we’ll learn how to collect and record nature observations, questions, connections, and explanations in our notebooks using words, pictures, and numbers. We’ll head back to the studio for the second half of the class to sketch items we’ve collected and learn new techniques to capture your nature observations throughout the year.
When: Sunday, 10/18, 12-2pm
Skills taught: This is less a drawing class and more an exercise in intentional observation. We’ll explore how to notate nature, connect observation to understanding, and foster curiosity through the combination of observation and loose sketching.
Skills needed: None! You don’t need to be an artist or naturalist to take and enjoy this class. All you need is curiosity and a desire to create in community.
Supplies used: We recommend you bring the following supplies for this class. If needed, CraftNation can provide most, but you’ll most likely want to bring your own sketchbook.
A sketchbook with a hard back or loose leaf drawing paper on a clip board. For sketchbooks, since we’ll be taking notes, Meg recommends a smaller sketchbook, nothing more than 9” x 12”
Pencils: regular #2, mechanical, etc
Pencil sharpener
Erasers
Drawing pens to solidify drawing marks if desired
CraftNation will have colored pencils, paints, markers, and brushes available should you want to add some pops of color
What you’ll leave with: Each student will leave with pages of sketches and notes from our nature observations, and an understanding of how to continue this practice on their own
Meet your teacher: Meg Lemieur (she/her) is a nature-focused illustrator based out of Philadelphia whose mission is to celebrate the diversity, interconnectedness, and amazing feats of the natural world. Her illustrations have been published as tabletop games, in comic anthologies, as large-scale educational projects, and more. She holds a certificate in Nature Journal Education, was awarded the Woman of Environmental Arts award by Penn Future in 2023 and was an Artist in Residence with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council in 2025.
