Description: Memory collaging is a term coined by craftsman Han McCoy to describe his unique way of intentional collecting and preservation of meaningful moments.
This type of crafting carefully weaves together elements of junk journaling, scrapbooking, and collage, resulting in a personalized piece of physical media that exists in the face of our digital age.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own nostalgic ephemera (ex: photos, handwritten letters/cards, collected ‘scrap’ or ‘junk’ papers, stickers, fabric, etc.) related to a specific event or memory that they would like to commemorate. Photo printers and standard collage supplies will be provided.
Feel free to bring your favorite beverage to enjoy while crafting. We have glasses available, no need to bring disposables.
When: Wednesday, 10/7 6:30-8:30pm
Skills taught: You will learn the basic elements of collage, and the creation of cohesive, dynamic compositions.
Skills needed: This is a great workshop for beginners! No prior skills required, just an eagerness to create!
Supplies used:We will use a variety of traditional collage material (magazines, vintage photos, ephemera, stickers, markers and pens). We will also have instaprint film available for use and recommend that you bring your own ephemera to create with.
What you’ll leave with: Students will leave with a finished collage which commemorates a recent or more nostalgic memory
Meet your teacher: Han McCoy (he/him) is an art historian and emerging craftsman. His personal practice revolves around collage and memory collecting, using the two in tandem in an attempt to examine the intersectional identities within him as an individual. He dedicates much of his time creating sustainable craft and stationery items under the name Birdie & Co., intending to make crafting accessible and highlight the importance of physical media. McCoy's professional and academic endeavors have been supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation; he has held positions at the Philadelphia Art Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
