The Guerilla Girls are an anonymous collective of feminist activist-artists formed in New York City in 1985 to combat racism and sexism within the art world. The members famously wear gorilla masks during appearances and adopt the pseudonyms of deceased female creators, such as Frida Kahlo and Kathe Kollwitz.
They are best known for using provocative poster campaigns, bold statistics, and sharp humor to expose the severe under representation of women and artists of color in major museums and galleries.
Ms. Amy will give a short lecture on the Guerrilla Girls founding and artwork through their founding to today. During the talk, we’ll enjoy a pizza lunch and color our own guerilla mask. Afterwards, you will paint your own snarky woman painting.
This event is BYOB. Feel free to bring your favorite beverage to enjoy while crafting. We have glasses available, no need to bring disposables.
When: Saturday, 10/31, 1-4pm
Skills needed: None! All you need is the desire to create in community and to have a fun evening.
Supplies used: All will be provided and will a mask template, markers, paints, and brushes
What you’ll leave with: You will leave with a deeper understanding of The Guerrilla Girls, a guerilla mask of your own, and a completed painting.
Meet your teacher: Amy Kelly is a Philadelphia based mixed media artist. Amy has a BFA in Drawing and has been teaching since 2013. Crocheting, bookbinding, and watercolor are her specialties. She currently makes commission paintings for clients, teachers art workshops, and makes mixed media artworks based on religious and cultural symbolism.
