Intro to Weaving, Thursday, 11/12
Description: Repurpose everyday materials into handwoven creations! Weaving is one of the most ancient art forms and can be used to create beautiful cloth and ornate designs. But at its basic level, it is a simple process of over and under that calms the mind and enlivens the spirit.
This workshop will demystify the weaving process in the same way Siena’s grandma taught her, teaching you how to build a simple loom from recycled materials such as cardboard and styrofoam, prepare the loom, and get to weaving.
We will meditate on color, texture, and time while delighting in the one-of-a-kind fabric coming into creation.
All materials will be provided but please feel free to bring any special yarn, string, fabric, or fiber-like debris to create your own mini textile art
When: Thursday, 11/12 6:30-8:30pm
Skills needed: None! All you need is the desire to create in community and patience with yourself
Skills taught: Students will learn how to make and prepare a simple loom, selecting and preparing weft and weave material (and what weft and weave material is!), plan weave, twining weave, and finishing your weaving.
Supplies used: All will be provided and will include cardboard looms, thread, yarn, and fabric strips. Please feel free to bring any special yarn, string, fabric, or fiber-like debris you would like to add to your individual weave.
What you’ll leave with: Every student will leave with a small finished weaving which could be used as a coaster, bookmark, or wall hanging, along with a DIY cardboard loom to continue their weaving explorations
Meat your teacher: Siena Faughnan (She/Her) is a third-generation textile artist, painter, and educator from Colorado and New Jersey. She studied history at Colorado College before earning her MA in Education and teaching art and history in classroom and community-based settings. She is a community-taught artist and has studied at Peters Valley Craft School, the John Campbell Folk School, the Penland School of Craft, MFA Boston, UC Berkeley, Anderson Ranch, the 92nd Street Y Art Center, and the Textile Arts Center.
Her work explores themes of duration, interconnection, and ancestry through a wide range of mediums including textile arts, printmaking, painting, and collage. She teaches workshops with the Youth Art and Self-Empowerment Project and Little City Montessori, as well as community art spaces throughout Philadelphia and New York.
Siena believes that creativity is for everyone and loves to give students of all levels the skills they need to explore, create, and express themselves. In her free time, Siena loves quilting, painting, and spending time with her cat, Diesel.
