Description: Bring a photo of your favorite pet and learn how to turn it into a finished drawing! In this beginner-friendly, 2-hour guided drawing class, you’ll explore how artists use shape, form, and texture to create believable animals.
We’ll start with short, easy tutorials that help you see the basic shapes hidden inside an animal’s body. Then, using pencil or ink pen, you’ll build a drawing of your own pet by following a simple drawing formula—starting with the main shapes and gradually adding details, features, and textures.
No drawing experience is required! You’ll receive guided instruction throughout the entire class, with each step broken down into approachable techniques you can use right away.
By the end, you’ll leave with a drawing of your pet, new skills for drawing from photographs, greater confidence in your abilities, and a practical method you can use to draw animals and everyday objects. Just bring a photo of your pet and come ready to draw!
When: Wednesday, 10/21, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Skills taught: You’ll learn the basics of drawing including:
Breaking complex subjects into simple shapes to make drawing detailed subjects easy
Drawing from photographs by observing and translating what you see
Building a drawing step-by-step using a simple drawing formula
Using pencil or ink to develop lines, details, and texture
Observational drawing: learning to really look at a subject before drawing it
Skills needed: None! No previous drawing experience is needed. This is a drawing formula and is great for a complete beginner or a seasoned professional. All you need is a sense of curiosity and patience with yourself.
Supplies used: All supplies will be provided and will include drawing paper, pens, and pencils.
What you’ll leave with: Each student will leave with a complete drawing of their pet.
Meet your teacher: Jennifer Scott (she/her) is a Philadelphia-based artist, illustrator, and educator. She creates detailed pen-and-ink drawings inspired by animals, nature, and everyday life under the name Hypergraphia. Her work has appeared in Art and Cake, The Philly Voice, and the print edition of Philadelphia Magazine.
Jennifer earned her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and has spent more than 25 years teaching. She loves making art fun and easy to learn and believes everyone can draw.
